The next spring, City Dog finds a new companion (Country Chipmunk), but he never forgets dear Frog. When summer arrives, City Dog teaches Frog some of his favorite games, which include “sniffing and fetching and barking.” By fall, however, Frog is too tired to play, and come winter, he is gone, leaving City Dog lonely and bereft over the loss of his friend. The duo meets in spring, on City Dog’s “first day in the country.” They romp and explore exuberantly, basking in each other’s company. Their relationship is sweet and heartfelt, much like that of Arnold Lobel’s beloved Frog and Toad series, without any of Frog and Toad’s misunderstandings.

Frog is in love… Other titles about Frog and his friends Hare, Duck and Pig include Frog in Winter, Frog is Frightened and Frog is Frog are equally witty and delightful.Fans of Mo Willems’ best-selling, laugh-out-loud Pigeon and Knuffle Bunny books may be surprised by the quiet tone of his new picture book, City Dog, Country Frog, in which a dog and a frog befriend one another. But his friend hare locates the cause of these irregularities elsewhere.

Frog is sure he is unwell he is hot and cold and his heart is going thump, thump. He manages to remain elegant and commanding despite wearing nothing more than a baggy pair of shorts. Frog is vibrant green and both witty and sensitive. In Frog in Love, the Dutch illustrator Max Velthuijs introduces another wonderful frog.

The gentle interaction of the pair and their pleasure in nature is both captivating and soothing. More like humans than the creatures they are named for, Frog and Toad enjoy the coming of spring, the healing benefits of reading aloud and the delights of swimming – with and without a swimming costume. In this, and in the subsequent titles including Frog and Toad Together and Frog and Toad All Year, each chapter is a simple and charming mini adventure. Arnold Lobel’s wonderful sequence of simple stories about Frog and Toad began with Frog and Toad are Friends.
